Web 5.0: The extension of web capabilities.

Web 5.0 is a decentralized web platform that allows developers to develop decentralized web apps (DWAs) using decentralized identifiers (DIDs), verifiable credentials (VCs), and decentralized web nodes (DWNs), reclaiming ownership and control of identity and data for users. It will be built on Bitcoin.

Before going further, I wrote about getting started with web 3.0. The article will give you a quick recap on the evolution of the web, and what web 3.0 has to offer.

I would have loved to briefly talk about web 4.0 which is still a work in progress, it is termed “The Symbiotic Web”, but web 5.0 (the intelligent and emotional web) came to the news earlier than expected. 🤞🤞

According to Jack Dorsey, web 5.0’s main goal is to give users total control over their data. Also, users can control the interaction of their data and how it will be used over the internet.

Interesting, right? 🤔🤔

Deep Dive

Web 5.0 is an evolution of the web that enables decentralized applications and protocols.

Currently, web users still murmur about not having total control over their data and identity, its usage, and the security aspect that is still a much concern in web 3.0; web 5.0 is promising to give complete control of data and identity to users because this informations will be saved with the users.

Pillars of Web 5.0

  1. DID did://: This self-owned identification allows decentralized authentication and routing of identities.
  2. Verifiable Credentials (VC): Data formats and a strategy for presenting and verifying assertions in a cryptographic manner.
  3. Decentralized web nodes (DWN): It handles data storage and message relay nodes. It, therefore, serves as the backbone for decentralized applications and protocols.

DIDs are self generated and self owned. It has no centralized provider or authority. It is resistant to interdiction, and it is universally discoverable.

DWNs are universally addressable and secure. DWNs can be encrypted with individual DID keys. Also, DWNs support asynchronous message threads.

Anatomy of a web 5.0 Identity wallet

  1. Data management: It has a graphical user interface (GUI) and capability for managing DWN credentials and application data.
  2. Credential function: sign, verify, discover, and present credentials to verifying parties.
  3. It performs authentication and manages authentication — “DID Auth”.
  4. It supports the creation, update, and update of DID across all supported DID methods.

It maintains and enforces which DID are used with different people, applications, or services.

The Evolution of DWA from PWA

Simply described, a Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website that has all of the features of an app. PWAs allow you to create a version of your website, more dependable, and more engaging. PWAs can do almost everything that native apps do, including work offline, access your camera and microphone if needed, and use GPS.

While a Decentralized Web App (DWA) is a revolutionary web application model that is far more secure. DWA has its protocols and data encrypted and sorted on a blockchain, unlike web apps.

Web 5.0 Interesting Part — Fun Facts

  1. When DID and DWN are used together, they create a web of DID-secured messaging, data storage, and credential sharing that can replace one-off protocols with universal standards for all sorts of semantic data transmission.

  2. In today’s world, many actions necessitate the establishment of trust between parties. Individuals, organizations, and businesses can use DIDs and DWN to broadcast credentials that anybody can find and independently verify.

  3. When you need data from your collection on numerous platforms, you won’t have to re-enter it. You can give these platforms access to your saved data, such as travel reservations, music playlists, bank account information, and so on.

Conclusion

The focus of web 1.0 was on connecting documents (resources) and establishing network access. Then there’s web 2.0, which is an environment where users contribute to the value (of websites). Similarly, web 3.0 allows you to create, own and be able to identify your data on the web. Web 4.0, on the other hand, is still a work in progress, it is termed “The Symbiotic Web”. Finally, web 5.0 is a sensory emotional region that gives users total control over their data. Also, users can control the interaction of their data and how it will be used over the internet.

We know more capabilities of human-technology exploration is still in progress, we await the amazing development and we hope it eases our day-to-day life and brings us more security.
